El Panecillo es una elevaci\u00f3n natural en medio de la ciudad que, en lengua originaria, llevaba el nombre de \u00abYavirac\u00bb; era un sitio sagrado para las culturas precolombinas de Quito que m\u00e1s tarde fue rebautizado por los espa\u00f1oles como \u00abpanecillo\u00bb, por parecerse a un pan, redondo y sim\u00e9trico.<\/p><p>El Panecillo no solo te ofrece la vista m\u00e1s espectacular del Sur de Quito, el Centro Hist\u00f3rico y el Norte de la ciudad; sino que tambi\u00e9n es el hogar de la Virgen Alada o \u00abLa virgen de Quito\u00bb, la escultura de aluminio m\u00e1s alta del mundo y una de las estatuas m\u00e1s altas de Am\u00e9rica, superando incluso al famoso Cristo Redentor de R\u00edo de Janeiro. Esta Virgen emula a la famosa Virgen de Legarda, \u00edcono de la escuela quite\u00f1a de arte colonial.
